Narrator 1
(pleasantly)
Easter is a time of joy. The long cold night of the crucifixion is past. The hard waiting of the tomb is over. In their place is the bright and glorious dawn of Christ’s resurrection. It is the day Jesus showed Himself free of the grave.
Narrator 2
But at the very heart of Easter is a mystery. It is something that one day we will understand, but is now too much for flesh to comprehend.
Narrator 1
The mystery begins long ago, on another cold night when God told all of enslaved Israel that if they would slaughter an innocent lamb, and paint its blood over each family’s door, they would be saved. God’s wrath would “pass over” any dwelling covered by the blood of the lamb.
Narrator 2
“The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13)
Narrator 1
Many centuries later, another Lamb would be slain. His blood would this time save sinners once and for all from the wrath of God.
(reading)
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. (Romans 5:8-9)
Narrator 2
There is the mystery. Why blood? Why must someone die? Surely there could be an easier way. Must there be pain and suffering and death?
Narrator 1
Here is God’s answer: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11 nkjv)
Narrator 2
And that is what Jesus did on the cross. He suffered, and bled, and died–for our souls. His life was spilled upon the altar one last time–for all time–that anyone who believes would be saved, and live forever with Him.
